Live Online Course

Empowering Multilingual Learners with Adverse Childhood Experiences

Multilingual learners may experience adversity in many forms, including trauma, violence, chronic stress, family separation, displacement, migration, and other significant disruptions. These experiences can profoundly affect students’ lives, yet they do not define who students are or the strengths they bring to school.

This three-part interactive course helps educators understand the impact of adverse childhood experiences while moving beyond a deficit-based view of students and families. Participants explore evidence-based strategies, tools, and examples for recognizing and building on students’ strengths and creating supportive instructional and school-wide environments.

Through live discussion, reflection, and application activities, participants consider how strengths-based practices can foster safety, belonging, engagement, and academic success for multilingual learners facing adversity.

Format: Live, synchronous online course
Professional Learning: 3 sessions plus extension activities, totaling 10 hours
Professional Development: Approved through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education PD Provider Registry.

Elevating Strengths: Supporting Multilingual Learners Facing Adversity

Multilingual learners facing adversity bring important strengths, experiences, relationships, and resources to school. Elevating Strengths helps educators recognize and build on these assets while responding to the effects of trauma, violence, chronic stress, and other forms of adversity.

Drawing from Teaching to Strengths: Supporting Students Living with Trauma, Violence, and Chronic Stress by Zacarian et al., this self-paced course translates research into practical educational strategies. Through authentic examples, reflection, and implementation planning, participants explore ways to create responsive learning environments that foster safety, belonging, value, competence, and academic success.

Designed for educators who want the flexibility to learn at their own pace, the course provides practical strategies that can be applied across classrooms, schools, and other educational settings..

Format: Asynchronous, self-paced online course
